Ed O'Leary
Sportswriter Eddie O'Leary, who died early Sunday at 62, lived a circular life.
To many people, he seemed like a brusque loner -a gruff, sports-obsessed bachelor with little patience for silly people - but it turns out, that was just one part of his life.
Eddie's world was actually a series of circles and Ed the coach, the card-shark, the pool hustler, the horse handicapper and the golf ace moved around those circles in confidence.
While the various aspects of his life didn't often overlap, there were common themes that bisected them.
Everyone knew Ed was generous -his motto when gift-giving was Go Big or Go Home, as evidenced when he insisted that his niece needed golf clubs and purchased a full set, bullying her mother into providing the matching golf lessons.
All his acquaintances knew Ed was a notorious storyteller. He could regale a group with tales of both the famous and infamous.
And everyone knew Eddie was a bit of a Luddite, wrestling with the new technology of the modern newsroom.
